Living in and around cities in Israel in the summer often brings around to your home in Israel unwelcome guests from cockroaches to other insects. Cockroaches eat everything, love warmth and humidity and will usually be found near food (the kitchen, for example) or organic substances (in bathrooms, building sewages, etc.).

In the past several decades the bedbug has been virtually eliminated from Israel, and indeed most other Western countries, thanks to aggressive extermination measures.  However, other insects including cockroaches are a common feature in the summer. To eliminate the possibility of getting into your home in Israel, there are a number of companies specializing in performing a wide variety of extermination services (risus), for the prevention and extermination of different insect pests (cockroaches, ants, ticks, fleas, termites, etc.) and rodents (mice and rats) which constitute a nuisance and a health hazard in homes and businesses. Now more and more owners of Israel real estate are using the services of professional exterminators for prevention, which is recommended to order once a year during the spring months. Spraying is the oldest and most common method used. In recent years it has become popular to use odorless materials (even though there is no connection between smell and effectiveness). In the extermination in homes professionals spray panels, windowsills and/or kitchen cabinets (in certain cases) and other hiding area. In special cases, there are companies offering a new method of extermination (intended for cockroaches only!) in which a gel is injected with a special syringe. In very recent years, increased awareness of environmental issues have provided a focus for companies to specialize in green extermination pest control, offering services such as flying insect control, rodent control, pigeon and crow removal, snake trapping, using low-toxicity pesticides, harmless to people, pets and plants.

When choosing a company it is important to make sure that the materials used for the services provided are supervised and approved by the Israeli Ministry for Environmental Affairs. The spraying by the exterminator, in particular the concentrations of the material, should comply with recommendations for use by the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Affairs. Most exterminating and spraying companies give a warranty and therefore the lengths of warranties should be checked before hiring. If a recurring extermination is required within these guarantee times, which are generally applicable for one calendar year, it must be conducted with no further charge added.

The price for exterminating home services of insects can vary between NIS 180 and NIS 250 depending on the size of the home, area and service required. In Israel it is very common to get a price quote from around three companies which offer similar services using similar technology to get the best price for the best service and/or ask around for services recommended or used by family and friends.

Before the service is started it is recommended to clear away all kitchen utensils and foods, in particular if cockroaches and ants have been spotted in the kitchen cabinets or the on the kitchen counters. Furthermore it is also necessary to move furniture for cockroach and ant extermination.

Once the extermination job in a home in Israel is finished, residents who don’t suffer from any special sensitivities, illnesses, etc. can enter the home after two hours and should leave all windows open for a couple of hours to air the home. Babies and small children up to the age of five can enter the home after two to eight hours depending on their age and animals between five and ten hours depending on the type of extermination.
